Our Story

Welcome to the official website of the GlamoRHOus Eta Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. located in Monroe, LA.

Eta Lambda Sigma, an Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was chartered on June 6, 1991 in under the leadership of Soror Mildred Reeves.  Eta Lambda Sigma (ELS) was chartered by 8 Sorors: Josephine Andrews, Doris Burks, Angela Earl, Letha Emanuel, Tina Prelow, Sylvia Reese, Mildred Reeves and Idell Warren.

The idea to establish the chapter began on May 25, 1991. The Gamma Kappa Sigma Chapter of Grambling, Louisiana included Sorors from Grambling, Monroe and surrounding areas. After definite and deliberate discussion among the Sigma's of the Monroe/ Bastrop Areas, a decision was made to form a chapter in the Monroe area. The travel to Grambling to attend Gamma Kappa Sigma meetings had proven to be too become to difficult to maintain. This matter was referred to Soror Lecia Swain, Regional Syntaktes. Instructions were that five (5) members would denote a chapter, and those Sorors would be chartered while attending Regional conference in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Annual Southwestern Regional Conference was held in Little Rock, Arkansas, June 7-9, 1991. Sorors Reeves and Warren traveled to Little Rock, and Eta Lambda Sigma Chapter Alumnae Chapter was born. Soror Mildred Reeves was nominated and elected to serve as the Eta Lambda Sigma Chapter first Basileus.

Eta Lambda Sigma served as the advising chapter for the undergraduate chapter, Kappa Theta, at Northeast Louisiana University now the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Kappa Theta was chartered in 1987. Founders of Kappa Theta assisted by Kevin Jackson, Pan Hellenic council President were: Dorothy Wilson, Brenda Willis, Mildred Reeves, and Evelyn Jenkins. Eta Lambda Sigma still advises Kappa Theta today and has recently taken over the advisement of the undergraduate chapter, Beta Omega, at Grambling State University. Currently, ELS has an active membership of over 31 Sorors and continues to grow in membership. We are also in the planning stages of offering services to young women and girls continuously throughout the year through our Rhoer and Rhosebud Affiliates.
